Seafloor turned into maps

“We completed a project that has lasted for 12 years. It aimed at creating a general image of the nature of Finland’s sea areas to develop marine geological mapping methods. It has surprised a lot of people that the soil types at the bottom of the sea and on dry land are very similar. It surprised me as well to see how diverse our seafloor is in places. From information that is important from the environmental point of view is now freely available at the VELMU portal. At the moment I am collecting soil type maps from the sea areas of the whole of Europe.”
